Marcus Smith gets keys to No.10 as Owen Farrell captains England from midfield

Marcus Smith will start at fly-half against Australia alongside England captain Owen Farrell after Eddie Jones finally got his way.

The pair have been selected at 10 and 12 a week later than head coach Jones planned, due to Farrell testing positive for Covid and Smith picking up a leg injury in training.

That meant a change with fullback George Furbank moved to No.10 and Manu Tuilagi playing inside-centre in last weekend’s game.

But Farrell is now available after his result was proven to be a false positive. And Smith gets the nod having proved his fitness off the bench with the last half hour against Tonga.

As a result Tuilagi shifts to the right wing in place of Adam Radwan and Furbank drops out of the squad, Max Malins coming onto the bench as back-up full-back.

Jones said: “We know this will be a tough test for us, we’re playing against a team who have been together a while and who have beat the world champions twice. As an Australian I know how much this game means.

“We’ve had a really good week of preparation, we’re looking to improve our performance this week and I think this side is building well.”
