Marcus Rashford warns Boris Johnson that free school meals win is "not the end of it"

Marcus Rashford says the government's decision to perform a U-turn on free school meals for children over the summer holidays is "not the end of it" as he promised to keep speaking up.

The Manchester United star won his battle with Boris Johnson over meals for young people after a remarkable social media campaign which received huge backing from celebrities and football clubs.

Johnson congratulated Rashford on the support he generated, but the forward says the move is just the start of what he hopes to achieved.

"This is only going to be successful throughout the summer period, so we've bought ourselves an extra six weeks of time there, and then we'll figure out what's next and how we keep taking steps forward," Rashford told BBC Breakfast.

"I don't want this to be the end of it because I think there are more steps that need to be taken, so we just need to analyse the response.

"Things like data in these type of topics are very important, and it is something that I wasn't aware of beforehand, and now that I am aware of that I'll definitely be watching that closely and seeing the response and how people cope with the situation, how it changes their lives for the better or the problems they might face with the system.

"So there are a lot of things that could chnage in the future and beyond this campaign."

Rashford also revealed what Johnson told him during their phone call on Tuesday.

"I am grateful that the Prime Minister did change his decision," he said. "He understood.

"I spoke to him and just thanked him for that - it was a nice conversation to have. I felt we understood each other.

"He was just obviously saying thank you for using what I've sort of built in a positive manner."
