Marcus Rashford slams Man United 'nonsense' after claims they threw in towel in during Liverpool drubbing

Marcus Rashford has hit back at claims Manchester United waved the white flag during their 7-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday.

The England forward attempted to explain the reason for the humiliating scoreline that left Erik Ten Hag's side nine points behind second-placed Manchester City. Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah - who became Liverpool's all-time leading Premier League scorer - ended the day with two goals apiece, with substitute Roberto Firmino completing a win that will live long in the memory of both clubs.

Sunday's 7-0 Anfield annihilation equalled United's record competitive defeat against Blackburn in 1926, Aston Villa in 1930 and Wolves in 1931. The thumping came a week on from lifting the Carabao Cup and ending the club's six-year wait for silverware. Fans and pundits slammed the United players following the loss at Anfield with many pointing the finger at some of the more experienced members of the dressing room.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Man United's Europa League game against Real Betis, Rashford said the tie on Thursday will give the players a chance to put the Liverpool loss behind them.

He said: "We didn't give up. That's nonsense. We were unorganised, yeah, communication was bad and that's why we conceded the goals. But it comes down to the fact that I believe everyone was trying to get back into the game that much that we came away from the principles in and out of possessions.

"As forwards, we were trying to press just as forwards, we weren't a unit, the same with the midfield and the defence. We were trying to get a grip of the game, we were talking, but we weren't in agreement of what to do. It's happened, the only thing we can do is learn from it.

"I'm grateful to have a game so quickly, because it allows us to take another step from the last game and put it behind us."
