Marcus Rashford set Manchester United challenge as key to success under Erik ten Hag revealed

Peter Schmeichel has been impressed with Marcus Rashford’s attitude since Erik ten Hag’s arrival at Manchester United, suggesting that this is the reason for his revival under his new boss.

His resurgence has seen him named in Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad, nearly 18 months after his last kick for his country in the Euro 2020 final penalty shoot-out. He is United ’s top scorer this season with seven goals, already beating last season’s tally of five.

Rashford’s confidence looks renewed and Schmeichel says his form is down to his mindset. "Marcus has done really well,” he said on Sky Sports. “When a new manager comes in, there’s new requirements, the player who listens and steps up are the players who shine on the pitch.

“I think he’s had some average years, where you ask what’s wrong with him? External activities might’ve hampered him but he’s come back, listened and I think he’s been fantastic.”

Rashford has become a staple under Ten Hag. He is preferred on the left but has been used as the central striker several times in the absence of Anthony Martial as Cristiano Ronaldo struggles for form.

Despite his goals this season, he has come in for criticism when leading the line with none of his strikes coming when playing as the central forward. Some believe he needs to be more clinical in his game, including Schmeichel.

He added: “One thing he can improve on is his finishing, he’s been at the end of so many chances and he could’ve closed out games but missed a little bit of quality."

Speaking about United’s season so far, Rashford revealed earlier this week what he was focused on moving forward. He said: “This season we've showed at times that we can compete with the best teams in the league, and then we've showed that there's no room to switch off.

“So we have to find a balance between the two and find consistency. If we just focus on ourselves and perform as best as we can every game, we'll win more games than we'll lose or draw. For me, that's my main focus."
