Marcus Rashford sends message to Manchester United fans ahead of Man City clash

Marcus Rashford has acknowledged that fixtures don't come bigger than the Manchester derby for Manchester United fans.

The Reds host Pep Guardiola's title-chasing Manchester City on Wednesday night looking to bounce back from their 4-0 defeat by Everton on Sunday.

That loss at Goodison Park was United's sixth in their last eight games and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men only remain in realistic contention for a top-four finish because Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham also failed to win over the weekend.

A win for United against City will significantly increase their chances of Champions League qualification ahead of Sunday's game against Chelsea and Rashford knows how important it is for United to come away from the derby with a positive result.

“United versus City and United versus Liverpool mean the most to every United player and every United fan,” Rashford told United Review.

“But, as a player, you have to understand that every game in the league is for three points and, whether you’re playing against Everton or Chelsea, they all have the exact same importance as when you play City or Liverpool. It’s the emotions which are a bit different.”

He added: “I know the fans are always emotionally attached to this game, like we are, and I’d just say always keep that feeling and we’ll do our best to get the three points.”

Rashford scored the winner in his first Manchester derby appearance three years ago as he left Martin Demichelis for dead before slotting the ball past Joe Hart at the Etihad.

“It was a great feeling,” Rashford said of that strike. “At the time of the goal, the game was quite open. They had a few more clear-cut chances and I think that was probably our first proper chance and we took it.

"When you go 1-0 up in the big games, you then have to control the game differently, and in that game we did it perfectly.”
