Marcus Rashford scoops another award after winning Government fight

Marcus Rashford has picked up yet another award after being named the PFA's Community Champion.

The Manchester United forward has enjoyed a hugely successful year on and off the pitch.

His efforts for the Red Devils helped them to a third place finish and secured Champions League football for next season.

But it is his work away from football that has earned him the most plaudits after he wrote an open letter to the government asking them to reverse their decision regarding free school meals.

A day later it was announced that No 10 would be extending the free school meals scheme throughout the summer.

Rashford's philanthropy around child poverty began when he teamed up with the organisation FairShare.

The initiative raised over £20m and became a national scheme after originally only targeting Greater Manchester.

And Rashford has recently spoken about the motives behind his public campaign.

“This was an issue I could relate to. This was something I had experienced. That my mum had experienced. That we had experienced as a family.

“I always swore to my mum that if one day I was in a position to help, then I would, and an opportunity presented itself. I took a risk, yes.

"But I reduced the risk by educating myself. I had listened and I had spoken to those most affected.

"I had been working with FareShare since before the lockdown so had seen first-hand how parents had become reliant on foodbanks and the support of the food vouchers.”

On the pitch Rashford enjoyed the best season of his career in front of goal scoring 22 times in all competitions.

It could yet end with the 22-year-old lifting the Europa League for the second time in four years after United progressed to the last eight of the competition.
