Marcus Rashford says “now is the time for collaboration” after speaking with the Prime Minister

Marcus Rashford says “now is the time for collaboration” after speaking with the Prime Minister.

The Manchester United striker is not backing down in his campaign to end child hunger.

His petition to extend free meals into the school holidays gathered more than one million signatures.

Despite this, Tory MPs voted down a Labour bid to extend support to struggling parents through the October half-term.

Boris Johnson has refused to extend free schools meals over the upcoming Christmas break - though he has pledged that no child will go hungry over the winter break.

Taking a seemingly determined and positive approach, Rashford tweeted on Saturday that he had spoken to Mr Johnson.

“Just had a great conversation with the Prime Minister, now is the time for collaboration,” he wrote in tweet that has amassed 75,000 likes.

Wythenshawe-born Rashford, 23, has captured the nation's imagination with his campaign.

Following the Commons vote more than 2,000 paediatricians signed a letter saying England should follow the devolved nations of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales and provide free meals during holidays.

Members of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) said they are shocked by the government’s “refusal” to do so, and praised Rashford for his “powerful campaigning” on the issue.

Scores of businesses and organisations across Greater Manchester - and the country - have pledged to offer free food to children from low income backgrounds.

Meanwhile, a powerful mural of the footballer has appeared in Withington, where Rashford used to live with his mum as a child.
