Marcus Rashford’s social media timeline was hailed as “spine-tingling” today as his school meals campaign was inundated with offers of support from restaurants offering to feed vulnerable children over half term.
The Manchester United and England footballer has been retweeting support from scores of restaurants, cafes, and pubs across the country who have promised to feed children in need over the school holidays.
Local councils have also said they will set up schemes to feed thousands of disadvantaged children next week,
Gary Lineker was among those to be inspired, tweeting: “Well played @MarcusRashford. Check his timeline. Extraordinary from a remarkable young man.”
Twitter user katherine Kook wrote: “Marcus Rashford’s timeline this morning is awash with the absolute best of humanity, to everyone contributing, you are all beauties!”
Another Fern Balch, wrote: “Just look at the hero that is @MarcusRashford‘s tweets this morning. Spine-tingling.”
The 22-year-old, who became an MBE this month, has been sharing the pledges of support from the flood of councils, businesses and organisations that have backed his campaign.
They have stepped in to help after MPs rejected his calls for the free meals scheme that helps vulnerable children during term time to be extended through the holidays.
A vote on the measures was backed by Labour and made its way to Parliament this week, but it was defeated by 322 votes to 261.
Businesses said they “stand with Rashford, not the 322”.
Those that have pledged support include Big Smoke Brew Co, whose pubs include locations in Surbiton, Kingston and Hammersmith.It said it was “donating 1000 free lunches to anyone who needs them to help feed their children over the coming half term.”
The footballer wrote: “Blown away by news of local businesses stepping up to fill the voucher scheme deficit during the October half term. Selflessness, kindness, togetherness, this is the England I know.”
