Marcus Rashford’s mum talks about the Manchester United star’s “fulfilling journey” from tough times to representing England at Euro 2020

Marcus Rashford could be in dreamland come the final whistle on Sunday evening. England have the chance to win this summer’s Euros when they take on Italy at Wembley Stadium.

The Three Lions made it to their first major tournament final in 55 years after beating Denmark 2-1 in extra time in Wednesday’s semi-final.

Ahead of the big game, the Manchester United forward’s mother Melanie has sent him a heartfelt message.

The 23-year-old has not shied away from talking about his tough upbringing, crediting his mum for being amazing during it.

Now an England international and on the cusp of winning only the Three Lions’ second major competition in their history, she said the following about her son’s “fulfilling journey” in the Telegraph :

"If there was a ball at Marcus' feet, there was always a smile on his face.

“A smile that can light up any room. When we had very little and times were tough at home, he found comfort in that ball.

"It is one of the most consistent things he’s ever had in his life. His escape.

"We lost tiles off the roof, vases went flying, school shoes got scuffed. All part of what has been the most fulfilling journey.

"I can’t think of a better feeling than seeing your child’s dreams come true. Pulling on that England shirt is met with endless pride and moments shared over this summer will be cherished forever.

"Communities have come together with a shared goal of bringing this home and it’s amazing to see a representation of all communities reflected in this squad.

"Come on England. We’re all extremely proud."

What a fantastic battle cry from Rashford’s mum. She along with the majority of the 60,000 fans inside Wembley on Sunday as well as millions of England supporters at home will be willing the nation to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy.

The 23-year-old is set to start on the bench for Gareth Southgate’s side against Italy, with minimal tweaking expected from the Three Lions’ boss.

Rashford, his mum and United fans will be hoping to see the England number 11 feature in the final.
