Marcus Rashford’s England U20 call-up dampens chances of Euro 2016 role

Marcus Rashford has been selected for the England Under-20 squad to play Canada in Doncaster on Easter Sunday, in a move that suggests Roy Hodgson regards him as only a remote prospect for the senior side’s Euro 2016 campaign in the summer.

Rashford has previously represented the Under-16 and Under-18 teams so the selection for the U20s is a promotion. Yet given he has also effectively been ignored for the Under-21 squad, which is announced on Thursday morning, it appears Hodgson wants to allow the 18-year-old time to develop.

While Rashford scored four goals in his opening two United appearances, he has not scored in the four games since, though Louis van Gaal has asked him to play wide on the right on occasion.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Rashford’s 19-year-old team-mate, who has impressed at full-back making 12 appearances this term, was chosen for the England Under-19s squad.
