Marcus Rashford reacts to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Manchester United management announcement

Marcus Rashford has sent his congratulations to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Norwegian was named permanent manager of Manchester United.

The club made the official announcement on Thursday morning having hired him as interim manager in December following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer was given the public backing of the players before Thursday's official announcement and since the announcement Rashford and Smalling have both sent their well wishes to 46-year-old.

Centre back Smalling was the first to tweet a picture with the caption: "Ole's at the wheel, congrats boss!"

And Rashford followed with a similar message of: "Congrats boss."

Rashford explained last month how having Solskjaer as a coach has helped him improve.

"For me, it's been a massive help having that type of guidance around me," he told Soccer AM.

"But he's been working with all of the players with everything he's got, you can see even the defenders are improving, the midfield is improving, the team's improved overall but we understand we can still take more steps forward.

"He has that know-how, the understanding, that's the kind of thing you just pick off naturally off these type of people. Even not just out on the pitch, having conversations about it, it all adds up. It's been a big turnaround. As long as we keep improving I don't see why [he shouldn't get the job permanently]."

United announced in a statement on Thursday that the Norwegian had been given a three year contract at the club.

Solskjaer replied: "From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club. It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here.

"The last few months have been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for the work we’ve done so far. This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve."
