Marcus Rashford reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo-esque winner for Man Utd at Chelsea

Marcus Rashford scored a stunning free-kick winner worthy of Cristiano Ronaldo to send Manchester United through to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

The England striker, who missed a penalty at Norwich on Sunday, opened the scoring with a 25th-minute spot kick.

Michy Batshuayi netted a fine individual equaliser for Chelsea after the break - but Rashford gave Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's side a hat-trick of away wins with a stunning 30-yard free kick.

“To be honest, it was the balls,” he said. “When we were training with them and we were shooting there was this up and down motion and they can go anywhere. Thankfully, today it went in the top corner. It is a positive day.

“With the penalty, you always step forward to take it and when the moment comes it is just about trying to be relaxed. Thankfully, today I was. It made the game a little bit easier for us but the second goal was the one that killed the game.”

Before road wins over Partizan Belgrade, Norwich and now Chelsea, Manchester United had not won away in any competition since the start of March.

“We have been in a tough place,” Rashford added. “We are still getting through that phase and the only way to do it is to fight your way through it.

"The main focus for us is just improvement and development because we are definitely going places. We have done a lot of good work.

"The start of the season wasn’t exactly what we expected but we have got to get through it and get back to winning games.”

The defeat ends a run of seven consecutive wins for Frank Lampard's side in all competitions.

Chelsea boss Lampard said: “The second goal was just special. It was a bolt out of the blue. No team can stop that. It is great technique.

"It was a stunning strike at a time where we had just got ourselves level and I thought we were in the ascendancy.”
