Marcus Rashford reaction and more moments missed in Manchester United FA Cup win vs Aston Villa

It wasn't pretty. It wasn't confidence-boosting. It wasn't really good at all. But Manchester United have scraped through to the next round of the FA Cup.

They did so by defeating Aston Villa 1-0, with Scott McTominay nodding in the game's only goal after just seven minutes from a lovely Fred cross.

That would be United's only moment of real quality in a game that was largely dominated by Villa who will be perplexed as to how they have exited the competition but may well be confident ahead of facing United again, this time in the Premier League, on Saturday.

Villa hit the crossbar, had two goals disallowed and forced David de Gea into several fine saves but were unable to find the back of the net so United advance to play Middlesbrough in the next round.

Here are six moments you may have missed from the game:

1 - Why Henderson wasn't involved

While Rangnick explained prior to kick-off that Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Phil Jones all missed the match due to minor muscle problems, he didn't explain goalkeeper Dean Henderson's absence.

It was predicted that the second-choice stopper would get a chance to impress in the third round match and De Gea would be given a rare rest, but the Spaniard played instead.

Though Henderson was unwell last week he did train on Sunday ahead of the game but was then omitted from the squad as he continues to push for an exit in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old has expressed his desire to leave on loan this month - with Ajax keen - but Rangnick doesn't want to let him go.

Efforts are continuing to secure Henderson a loan move before deadline day as he wants regular playing time, but the interim boss wants three first-team ready goalkeepers at his disposal.

2 - Warm welcome for Gerrard

The match was Villa manager Steven Gerrard's first time back at Old Trafford since that infamous day in January 2015, when the Liverpool captain was sent off just 38 seconds after coming on in his final match between the two fierce rivals.

That game was at Anfield so United supporters have been waiting a long time to poke fun at one of their greatest foes and they did so with glee.

Gerrard was met by a hailstorm of boos as he made his way to the dugout ahead of the match but he didn't shy away and actually turned to face the Stretford End as he walked down the touchline. The start of the match was, unsurprisingly, dominated by chants aimed at Gerrard and his hometown for the opening minutes.

3 - Nasty cut for Dalot

Towards the end of the first-half it looked as though United were going to lose Diogo Dalot to injury, which would have been a shame as the right-back was putting in another confident display.

It didn't appear that he had been on the receiving end of a bad challenge, but the Portuguese was down for a few minutes as he received medical attention and it soon became clear that he was bleeding on his ankle or foot.

It looked to be quite a nasty cut but Dalot eventually got back up to his feet and was able to carry on for the full 90 minutes.

4 - Why Villa's first goal was disallowed

Villa looked as though they had found a deserved equaliser just after the break when Danny Ings turned in Ezri Konsa's header but VAR had another thing in mind.

The check was lengthy and frustrating as several replays were shown, seemingly trying to adjudge if Ollie Watkins had touched the ball before Ings, meaning the scorer would have been offside when tapping the ball home. Eventually, the referee indicated that the goal would not stand.

It was not for the narrow and controversial offside as it appeared to be, however, and instead for a body-check Konsa made on Edinson Cavani in the build-up.

5 - A bad night for Rashford

It was not a good night for Marcus Rashford. Far from it.

Not on one but two occasions, the striker drew the ire from the home crowd as he didn't try to pounce on a loose ball when it seemed up for grabs and his overall play was poor as his dire run of form continues.

When he was taken off with eight minutes to go, a section of the Old Trafford crowd appeared to turn on him further as they cheered when his number was held aloft by the fourth official. Though other fans quickly countered by chanting his name.

Rashford looked dejected as he sat on the bench afterwards and his confidence seems shot to pieces.

6 - Great Lingard skill

The match was lacking in many moments of magic but Jesse Lingard managed to provide at least one spark of excitement as it drew to a close.

Despite being trapped by the corner flag by two defenders, Lingard managed to back-heel the ball away without even looking at it before twisting away from his markers to restart the attack.

It was a lovely piece of skill in a match that didn't have much of it and perhaps further increases Lingard's case for more playing time.
