Marcus Rashford pinpoints key area Man Utd need to work on after narrow Brighton win

Marcus Rashford feels Manchester United need to eradicate sluggish starts from their game if they want to achieve success this season.

The striker scored in United's 3-2 win over Brighton on Saturday but his side were fortunate to come away with all three points.

United even fell behind in the clash at the Amex Stadium, though it did take 40 minutes before Neil Maupay's opener from the penalty spot.

By that stage though, Brighton had already hit the woodwork three times and could have been out of sight.

It was the second game in succession where United were laboured coming out of the blocks, and Rashford believes it's something his team need to work on.

“We have to use these three points as motivation to improve and keep getting better," Rashford told MUTV after the win. "We have to improve if we want to hit our targets for the season.

“We had a slow start in the last league game and it's more important to pick up points. It’s more important that we lost the first league game, we had to win today.

“It doesn’t matter how we won, we got the three points and we’ll move forward and improve.”

A quick fire equaliser - courtesy of a Lewis Dunk own goal - meant the scores were level at the break, before Rashford put United ahead 10 minutes into the second half.

Late drama then saw both teams score in stoppage time, with United's winner coming after the final whistle had already been blown.

Maupay was this time on the receiving end of the penalty decision, as he was punished by the VAR for a handball which deflected Harry Maguire's header on goal.

Bruno Fernandes converted the spot kick 10 minutes into added time to cancel out Solly March's goal just moments earlier, and Rashford admits it was a fortuitous end for the Red Devils.

"We were definitely lucky to get the three points," he added. "But even when they equalised we showed a lot of character and desire to keep pushing forward. We forced a corner out of nothing, a throw-in on the left-side.

“It was Harry’s determination to win the ball, he won the penalty for us and Bruno tucked it away.”
