Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has called on vile racist abuse to stop after Marcus Rashford was targeted on Twitter following his missed penalty for Manchester United in their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace.
The England striker suffered the same treatment as Paul Pogba from anonymous online users, with the Frenchman missing a spot kick against Wolves on Monday.
Online abusers repeatedly used the N-word in response to Rashford’s miss and Solskjaer has had enough.
“We need to stop it, it needs to stop,” Solskjaer said. “I’m just lost for words if it keeps going. We keep having all these campaigns and they keep hiding behind fake identities. It’s crazy that we talk about this in 2019.”
It comes just days after Pogba’s Man United teammates rallied around him after the abuse, with Solskjaer admitting his disbelief at the situation in 2019.
“Paul’s fine,” said Solskjaer. “Paul’s a strong character and it makes him stronger. I just cannot believe we still sit here in 2019 talking about these instances.
“Social media is a place where, as Harry said, people can hide behind fake identities.
“I don’t think it’s down to me to change it but we’ve got to do something about it and the authorities have got to do something about these ones that spread this hate.
“You just feel sorry for them really. They must have problems themselves when they have to do this.”
Fans at Old Trafford responded to Pogba suffering abuse on Monday by raising a banner on Saturday that read: ”United against racism”.
