Marcus Rashford inspires Belfast man to get on his bike for charity

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has inspired a Belfast man to get on his bike for charity.

Barry Flood used pedal power to raise over £700 for a North Belfast foodbank.

The 22-year-old cycled 200km in the space of five days after being furloughed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Barry's challenge took him around the scenic sights of Lough Neagh, where he encountered wind, rain and a puncture on day four.

But it was all worth it in the end for Barry who raised the fantastic sum of money for the Community Foodbank situated in Ardoyne.

Barry said he took inspiration from Manchester United and England striker Rashford, who has been campaigning to get free school meals for kids.

“I saw the recent work that Marcus Rashford was doing, campaigning for free school meals for kids," Barry said.

“I thought that I would try and emulate what Marcus was doing in some small way. He inspired me to try and do something to help struggling families in the North Belfast community.”

Barry added: “We all need to support each other in any way we can during this recent crisis.

"There is great community spirit in North Belfast and the work undertaken by the volunteers at the North Belfast Foodbank is just one example.

"I thought that I would try and raise some much needed funds for their project, with this personal challenge of a 200km solo bike ride.

“The views around Lough Neagh are amazing, when it’s not lashing with rain! Unfortunately there were not too many clear days to enjoy the view.

“I would like to thank all those people who sponsored me to take on this challenge, and your support is very much appreciated!”
