Marcus Rashford hits back at Owen Hargreaves over "fuming" Ole Gunnar Solskjaer comments

Marcus Rashford has hit back at claims he was "fuming" with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for leaving him on the bench on Saturday.

Manchester United saw off Tottenham 3-0 in north London after they opted for a change in system.

Solskjaer named the oldest starting XI of his tenure and went with a back five to ease their defensive woes.

It meant Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho were all on the bench as Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani got the nod up front.

The two veterans scored before Rashford, introduced after 71 minutes, added a third.

The strike let out his emotion as he celebrated with former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves suggesting he was angered by Solskjaer's decision to leave him out.

"I think you could see that in his celebration, he was fuming," he told Premier League Productions.

"But when two legends of the game are playing ahead of you it’s hard to complain in a sense.

"He [Solskjaer] is never going to drop Ronaldo, he needed somebody else in there and Cavani was fabulous last season. He probably deserved to start sooner."

Rashford, who has scored three times in four games since returning from injury, has hit back at those suggestions.

He insists his celebration stemmed from relief - not anger.

Rashford tweeted: "Fuming at the manager??! We won the game. That celebration was pure relief! It’s been a hard week…"

Solskjaer's formation and personnel tweaks enabled United to keep a rare clean sheet - and it also proved to be Nuno Espirito Santo's last game in charge at Tottenham.

Gary Neville has cast doubt over the long-term suitability of the system however, with the omissions of Rashford and co a problem.

"There is no doubt this is not Ole’s plan. Leaving Sancho, Greenwood and Rashford on the bench is not the plan," he said.

"That wasn't the plan in the summer for the recruitment, it wasn't the plan in the summer for Ole, that’s not what he was thinking he was going to play."

Rashford played in the humiliating defeat to Liverpool just over a week ago, which saw the pressure mount on Solskjaer.

He remained silent on social media for several days before issuing a statement claiming he was embarrassed.

He said: "I can’t lie you haven’t heard from me on here because as a United fan I didn’t really know what to say after Sunday. I was embarrassed.

"I am embarrassed. Our fans are everything and you didn’t deserve that. We’re working hard to try and fix this. We have to redeem ourselves."

United face Atalanta and Manchester City this week before the next international break.
