Marcus Rashford failed to listen to Erik ten Hag's advice before Manchester United vs Newcastle

Erik ten Hag will be frustrated with Marcus Rashford's lack of ruthlessness in front of goal, after warning the striker that he needs to be more clinical ahead of Manchester United's 0-0 draw with Newcastle at Old Trafford.

United failed to capitalise on a handful of golden chances to score against Newcastle, as both Rashford and Fred were found guilty of missing superb opportunities to put the Reds in front. Ten Hag's side failed to find a spark in front of their own fans, mustering only two shots on target during the match.

Fred somehow managed to put the ball wide when presented with an open goal, after Rashford did well to beat the offside trap and flick the ball past an onrushing Nick Pope. The 24-year-old then found the Brazilian, who opted to place the ball, yet his attempt agonisingly sailed past the post.

Rashford was also presented with a match-winning chance in the 95th minute, but he failed to find the net with his header on the edge of the six-yard box. The signs of United's failure to be clinical in front of goal were clear from their 1-0 win over Omonia Nicosia earlier in the week, where they needed 34 attempts to break the deadlock.

After the match, Ten Hag told Rashford that he needed to be more ruthless in front of goal, saying: "He did a lot of things well but finally he knows that he has to be more clinical and he had to score a goal. When you have such good movements and make such good combinations, good actions, then you have to finish.

"I know sometimes it's the game, it's not your night and it's about the form of the day, but it can change in another game. I think he's on a really good run, that shows in the chances he creates."

Ten Hag will be keen for Rashford to find his shooting boots ahead of their midweek clash with Tottenham at Old Trafford.
