Marcus Rashford explains how Jose Mourinho improved him as a player

Marcus Rashford insists that Jose Mourinho improved him as a Manchester United player, despite going through some "ups and downs" under his stewardship.

Mourinho spent two-and-a-half years as United boss, and picked up both the Europa League and League Cup trophies in 2017.

Rashford was looking to establish himself in the side at the time, having broken through into the first-team at the tail end of Louis van Gaal's time in charge.

And although his relationship with Mourinho often appeared to be difficult, he insists it was a union that will prove to be good for his career.

"It was tough but I think when you look back on it in five or six years, they're the moments that give you that mental toughness," Rashford told the UTD Podcast.

"As an all-round player I've improved a lot and a lot of it is down to those two years under Jose.

"We had ups and downs. When I look back at it, it was a tough period but definitely a period that made me a better player."

Mourinho brought Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Old Trafford in his first summer at the club, reuniting with him after the pair had been together at Inter Milan.

And Rashford says that Swede was another figure he learned from.

"His mentality was beyond anything I'd ever played with before," he said.

"He didn't care what anyone would say to him or what anyone was saying about him.

"In terms of his mentality he was key to my development, especially when Jose was there because he was someone who had played under him before and he knew you had to be a certain type of way to survive under him."
