Marcus Rashford close to agreeing bumper Manchester United contract

Marcus Rashford is closing in on a new long-term Manchester United contract after holding productive talks with the club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer views Rashford as a key player for United's rebuild and intends to continue with the 21-year-old as his first choice centre-forward for years to come.

MEN Sport understands recent contract talks between Rashford's representatives and the United hierarchy have progressed well and a new and improved deal will soon be signed and sealed.

Rashford's current contract has just a year to run, with United eager to renew and Solskjaer keen to rebuild his squad around the England forward.

Despite enduring a difficult end to the season when Rashford failed to find the net in his final eight appearances of the season and United's form plummeted, he was particularly prolific immediately after Solskjaer's appointment as Jose Mourinho's successor. Rashford scored a free-kick at Cardiff City three minutes into the Solskjaer regime, beginning a scoring streak that saw him score six times in eight league starts between December and February.

With United pondering whether to cash in on Romelu Lukaku amid interest from Inter Milan and with Alexis Sanchez's future at the club far from secure, Rashford is set to spearhead the Reds' attack under Solskjaer.

He will be joined in Solskjaer's attacking options by new signing Daniel James and current duo Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, with Mason Greenwood likely to be handed more first-team opportunities too.

The exact length and salary details of Rashford's new deal have not yet become clear, though it is understood he will receive a significant pay rise with a four or five year deal, with an extra 12-month option, likely to be agreed.

Rashford was briefly linked with a transfer to Barcelona in May, though United have always been confident that he would commit himself long-term to the club.
