Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard spark fury after both post '0.012%' on Instagram

Manchester United pair Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard both felt the wrath of fans after they simultaneously posted '0.012%' on Instagram .

Neither player explained what the post was about or why they had both decided to share it to their Instagram Stories at the same time, but it didn't take long for fans to work out that they were referencing the low number of young players who make it to the very top in the Premier League.

That number was given in a Business Insider article referencing the chances that youngsters have of making it in the English game, something that both Rashford and Lingard have as footballers for United and England.

Rashford and Lingard's Instagram activity was closely monitored on Tuesday (PA)

A section of the article reads: "The most damning statistic of all is only 180 of the 1.5 million players who are playing organised youth football in England at any one time will make it as a Premier League pro.

"That's a success rate of 0.012%. Pretty much the sort of chances of you being hit by a meteorite on your way home."

And while Rashford and Lingard of course deserve to be celebrated for their achievements in making their way in the game, some fans hit back at what they saw as arrogance from the pair in pointing out their elevated status, especially given United's disappointing end to the season.

On Twitter , '@CharlieFoster8' wrote: "Rashford and Lingard posting “0.012%” on their stories has me fuming. The fact that only 0.012% of players reach Premier League standard should make you more humble and grounded - yet you live for posting a pic on Instagram after each game."

'@jamiejones94' added: "I like rashford but him and lingard tweeting 0.012% or whatever thinking making it pro makes you silence the critics, Phil Jones made it and nobody is gonna remember anything he’s done, start performing."

The pair are both currently with the England squad ahead of the UEFA Nations League finals in Portugal.
