Marcus McGuane transfer latest: Where Nottingham Forest stand, Barcelona's stance and the complications

Nottingham Forest still hope to complete the signing of Barcelona midfielder Marcus McGuane.

But this is one deal where patience continues to be required.

Here's the latest.

Who is Marcus McGuane?

He's a midfielder who came through Arsenal's academy and made two senior appearances for the club before moving to Barcelona, becoming the first Englishman to make a move to the club since the days of Gary Lineker.

McGuane can play across the midfield, or as a wide defender.

He joined SC Telstar on a loan earlier this season operated as part of a midfield three for them, making 14 appearances.

What's the deal?

McGuane's potential move was complicated to sort out.

The Reds have been working on a move for the 21-year-old for almost a month, with a view to him initially linking up with Chris Cohen’s Under-23s squad.

Firstly, Barcelona needed to recall him from SC Telstar and cancel his current loan to that club - then they, and the player, would have to agree to terms with Forest.

That's not necessarily a simple thing to do, and the administrative background to that three-way move could take a while to complete. As long as the paperwork was filed correctly, McGuane will be free to move to Nottingham Forest, on a permanent deal - which seems set to go ahead.

Where do we stand?

The switch has proved to be a complicated one, with McGuane having been on loan at Dutch side Telstar, who, it was claimed, wanted a “decent fee” from the Championship outfit if his spell was to be ended early.

Personal terms are understood to have been agreed between Forest and the player, but paperwork has delayed the move - although the vast majority of it is believed to have been completed.

It is thought the hold up is currently coming from the Barca end, and while it could still take time to go through, the Reds remain hopeful of adding McGuane to their ranks.
