Marcus Maye will return to the Jets in 3-4 weeks, but it’s possible he leaves the team soon after.
The safety will miss a month, give or take, after suffering an ankle injury on Wednesday. That timeline means Maye should be back before the Nov. 2 trade deadline, a detail that was not lost on his agent, Erik Burkhardt.

This is not the first time Burkhardt has hinted at his unhappiness with Maye’s situation in New York. The rep was actually far more direct in March, ripping the Jets in the middle of contract extension talks that ultimately went nowhere.
Maye is playing this season on a one-year franchise tag, which has sparked speculation about the 28-year-old’s short- and long-term future. The Jets’ 0-3, uncompetitive start has only added fuel to that fire, as they are a team that is positioned to sell.
Maye recorded 23 tackles, one sack and one pass defended in three starts before his injury. He is the only Jets defender who has played every snap in 2021.
Maye’s injury was revealed hours after fellow safeties Ashtyn Davis and Sharrod Neasman returned to practice following injured reserve stints. Robert Saleh said there is a chance they could be activated this weekend, but the Jets have 21 days before they must add them to the active roster.
Adrian Colbert and Jarrod Wilson are the only healthy active safeties, though Sheldrick Redwine is on the practice squad.
