Portsmouth head coach Danny Cowley believes that Marcus Harness deserves his first full call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad soon.
The winger has had a strong start to the 2021/22 League One season, scoring against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday before providing the assist for Ryan Tunnicliffe’s winning goal against Shrewsbury Town at Fratton Park on Tuesday night.
Harness declared himself as an Irish international in 2019 and while the winger is yet to earn an official call-up to Stephen Kenny’s side, Pompey’s No.10 did briefly link-up with the Irish team for the 0-0 draw with Bulgaria in the UEFA Nations League in November 2020.
While Harness was in Dublin with the squad, he did not make the matchday side.
In 52 games last season, Harness scored ten goals for the Blues including a hat-trick against former club Burton Albion. He also finished top in League One assists out of Pompey’s squad last season.
Cowley is a big admirer of the winger and sees a lot of quality in him, with the Pompey boss stating that Harness is deserving of an international selection soon.
“Someone like Marcus, he has to be in the Irish squad for me,” Cowley told HampshireLive .
“I look at what he gives us on a consistent basis in terms of scoring goals, in terms of creating goals. The quality he has, which we see on the training pitch day in, day out.
“I really believe he will be the next one that makes that breakthrough.”
