FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio is proposing a multi-part plan to beef up reporting of potentially violent students, following the deaths of 17 people after a gun shooting in his district.
Rubio, R-Fla., unveiled his plan to the Senate Thursday. While it did not touch the topic of gun regulation, he said he would be "open to" discussing age limits and other regulatory reforms on semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines.
The announcement comes a week after Rubio was jeered by survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, where 17 students and teachers were killed by a gunman.
Rubio appeared Feb. 21 at "Stand Up: The Students of Stoneman Douglas Demand Action," a two-hour town hall organized and televised by CNN. During the town hall, students criticized campaign contributions Rubio received from the National Rifle Association.
Earlier Thursday, Rubio tweeted that his plan is aimed at keeping students safe in school and keeping any guns of any kind out of the hands of dangerous or deranged people.
"We all agree that what happened in Parkland can never happen again anywhere," he tweeted.
