Secretary of State Marco Rubio mourned on Monday the death of Miguel Uribe Turbay, the Colombian senator shot more than two months ago during a presidential campaign rally.
"The United States stands in solidarity with his family, the Colombian people, both in mourning and demanding justice for those responsible," Rubio said in a social media publication.

Uribe Turbay was shot on June 7 after being shot in the head and the leg. He remained hospitalized ever since, undergoing numerous surgeries until finally succumbing to his wounds. His death was confirmed by his wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, who said on Instagram "you'll always be the love of my life." "Thank you for a life filled with love, thank you for being a father to the girls, the best dad to Alejandro," she added.
There have been arrests connected to the assassination. Last month, the alleged mastermind of the attack, Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, was arrested in northern Bogota.
Charges against the man include attempted aggravated homicide; trafficking and carrying firearms or ammunition; and using minors to commit crimes, considering the material author of the crime was a 14-year-old.
The minor, in turn, has been held in preventive detention and charged with attempted homicide and illegal possession of a weapon. Due to his age, the suspect faces a maximum sentence of eight years under Colombian juvenile sentencing laws, El País reported.
Other three people have been arrested: one coordinated the logistics, another drove a car transporting the perpetrators, and a woman carried the gun then used for the shooting.
