'Marching on together!' - Everything Erling Haaland has said on Leeds United and Premier League

Erling Haaland has once again reminded everyone of his Leeds United roots with a video celebrating the city's twinned status with Dortmund.

The forward was born in Leeds while his father - Alfg-Inge Haaland - played for the Whites, and many fans dream that one day the Borussia Dortmund star will play at Elland Road himself.

With the 20-year-old ranked as one of the highest-rated young footballers in the world, he appears to be out of Leeds' price range in the short-term.

Yet Haaland himself has made no secret of his connection to the Whites over the last few years.

Here is everything the Norwegian striker has said about Leeds United.

When will Kalvin Phillips return for Leeds?

‘The dream is to win the Premier League with Leeds’

In one of Haaland’s first interviews, as a 16-year-old in 2017, the forward, who was then at Norwegian club Molde, revealed his desire to play for Leeds.

He told Aftenposten: “I want to be the best possible. The dream is to win the Premier League with Leeds.

“In addition, the goal is to become a better player than dad was. I hope to be able to get more international matches than he did.”

‘He was a Leeds fan’

In the summer of 2019, Haaland’s father revealed his son grew up as a fan of the clubs he played for.

“He was a Leeds fan, and a City fan, and a Nottingham Forest fan,” said Haaland senior.

“He followed me obviously, and that’s what you do in your youth. It’s different being a supporter than having it as your job.

“At one stage, I think he’d like to play in the Premier League, but when that’s going to happen, I don’t know. It’s a very tough league, up to now he’s ahead of the stage we thought he’d be at.

“He’s built for the Premier League at one stage, but whether that’s going to happen now or at a later stage we don’t know, but hopefully one day.”

‘I scored at Anfield’

In 2019, Haaland poked fun at his father’s record for Leeds after netting for RB Salzburg against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Haaland senior scored for the Whites at Anfield in 1997 and Erling said he had now matched his father’s achievements.

“Now I have the same number of goals here,” he said. “He’s always telling me ‘I scored at Anfield, I scored at Anfield!’

“Now I can say it back to him: ‘So have I!’”

Shirt signing

In December 2019, at the height of speculation over where Haaland would move to, the striker was pictured signing shirts from multiple clubs.

One of those was the cult classic 1999/2000 Leeds United away shirt.

‘I don’t know what you’re talking about’

Haaland distanced himself from his Leeds United dream after an impressive start to life at Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking to France Football in March 2020, the forward was asked if he was still a Leeds fan and he rowed back on his comments.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, before appearing to refuse to answer a follow-up question relating to his dream to win the Premier League with the Whites.

‘You support them because you support your dad’

A month later, in April 2020, Haaland revealed his fresh dream would be to win the Champions League at Borussia Dortmund.

Yet he also spoke about his support for his father’s former clubs, including Leeds.

He told Four Four Two: “That (winning CL with Dortmund) would be a very nice dream.

“My father played for different Premier League teams, so of course you become a fan. You support them because you support your dad.”

Dallas shirt swap

Haaland again came to the attention of Leeds fans earlier this season when he opted to swap shirts with Stuart Dallas after Norway’s 5-1 win over Northern Ireland.

The exchange left both players with smiles on their faces and, speaking post-match, Haaland paid tribute to the Whites star.

“I think he is a great player and the best player out there today,” he said.

Revealing more about what happened, Dallas said the situation took him totally by surprise, but that they shared some chat about Leeds.

“I’m not one for swapping shirts,” Dallas told talkSPORT. “I like to keep my own shirt, no matter who I play against.

“He walked behind me and asked about swapping shirts. It probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do, because we’d just been beaten 5-1 and I’m laughing on camera.

“It probably didn’t look too good. I thought he meant inside, but he shouted at me and asked to do it now.

“We did it and then he leaned into me and said, ‘Marching on together!’

“It was a bit strange. I’ve known the Leeds connection with his father and it was nice he wanted my shirt.”

He added: “What a player he is and hopefully we will see him in the Premier League one day with Leeds.”

‘I like both cities’

In a new video celebrating 50 years of Dortmund and Leeds being twinned together, Haaland sent his regards.

He said: "Congratulations for 50 years of partnership between Leeds and Dortmund. I like both cities and I hope they will be friends for a long time."
