The 2021 NCAA Tournament is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in a long time, rife with big upsets and shocking results. There are 16 games still left on the March Madness schedule across the next two days as the 32 teams left in the Big Dance field battle in the second round for a Sweet 16 spot.
There were plenty of upsets in the first round, highlighted by a rare No. 15 victory over a No. 2 when Oral Roberts toppled a giant in Ohio State. Some other notable Cinderella stories include No. 14 Abilene Christian’s win over No. 3 Texas, No. 13 Ohio knocking out No. 4 Virginia—removing the defending champs from the NCAA Tournament field—and No. 13 North Texas besting No. 4 Purdue in an overtime thriller.
The always popular No. 12 vs No. 5 upset also occurred when Oregon State took care of business against Tennessee and a pair of No. 11 seeds also won in UCLA and Syracuse, two bluebloods who moved onto the second round with victories over BYU and San Diego State, respectively.
If your bracket is in rough shape due to these results, don’t feel bad, as literally everyone who entered a major online March Madness bracket challenge had their bracket busted before the first weekend of the 2021 NCAA Tournament even wrapped up. According to NCAA.com, the world’s last three remaining perfect brackets were all busted when Maryland beat UConn on Saturday evening.
With an incredible nine double-digit seeds competing for a Sweet 16 berth on Sunday and Monday, it is hardly a shock that there is not a single unblemished bracket left. The NCAA Tournament record for No. 12 or higher seeds winning their first-round matchups was four, which was broken this year when five teams fitting that criteria advanced to the second round.
It remains to be seen if these Cinderella squads can keep dancing into the Sweet 16, but it won’t take long to find out. The second round begins shortly on Sunday afternoon with the first of today’s eight exciting contests tipping off.
