Marcelo Bielsa urged to make Tyler Roberts call as finance expert outlines Leeds United strategy

Here is your Leeds United morning digest on Sunday, January 10.

Whelan urges Bielsa to let Roberts leave

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan has urged Marcelo Bielsa to allow Tyler Roberts to leave Elland Road this month on a permanent transfer.

Whelan believes his former club need to start being more ruthless and offload the players that aren't going to make the cut in the Premier League.

Reports emerged that Bielsa wasn't sure whether to let Roberts leave Yorkshire this month, and now the ex-Leeds man has urged the Argentine coach to let him do just that.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: "I mean, in my opinion, I would let him go, I think he’s kind of shown enough to me over the past 18 months on his day he can be a decent player.

"Is he a Premier League player in my opinion? No. I’m not sure whether he can actually cut it at the top level. I think he’d be a very good Championship player with somebody but we’re not looking to go back into the Championship."

Leeds legend backs Bielsa's style

For every bit of praise Bielsa's style of play has received this season, there has also been plenty of criticism.

The Leeds boss operates with a very attacking system to try and get the most out of his forward players, with a high press and man-to-man marking.

Whites legend Johnny Giles believes the manager is correct to stick to his attacking philosophy despite some people calling him out for using it.

"If you're doing something as drastic as he's doing, you can't change it," Giles said to Off The Ball's YouTube show.

"You can't change it for match and say 'right, we don't do it today lads'. You might be able to do it with better players, but with better players you wouldn't need to do it.

"That's the point about Bielsa. It's hard to describe him because people say three years ago he went to Leeds and they were in the middle of the second division going nowehere. But the players that he's had, he's got them up into the Premier League and I think they'll stay there, doing what they do."

Finance expert reveals Leeds strategy

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has insisted Leeds will not make the same mistake as some of their Premier League rivals have done in the past in terms of overspending in the transfer window.

West Ham United paid £50million for striker Sebastien Haller in 2019 and the Ivory Coast forward never proved his worth during his time at the London Stadium.

Haller recently completed a £20m move to Ajax - with the Hammers having to settle for a £30m loss on the centre-forward.

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire has explained Leeds' strategy and how the club's chiefs have got the balance right at the moment.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: "Haller, Wesley, Joelinton are all examples of spending large amounts of money and getting next to nothing in return. So Leeds’ strategy always comes with a degree of risk.

"But I think they’ve got the balance right this season. They’ve clearly got a particular style of play, they’ve recruited players into that style and they’re a breath of fresh air."
