Marcelo Bielsa tipped for Man Utd job as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer criticised

Marcelo Bielsa has been backed to take over at Manchester United following their opening day loss to Crystal Palace.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer watched his side succumb to a disappointing 3-1 defeat on the same day Bielsa's Leeds earned their first Premier League win since 2004 with a 4-3 victory over Fulham.

United's result puts unnecessary pressure on Solskjaer who despite improving the club's fortunes last season still has his share of critics.

One of those is talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino who was left unimpressed by Solskjaer's impact on the match with Palace, and suggested Bielsa would be the ideal replacement.

“I think Solskjaer got a lot wrong yesterday because he should have made changes a lot earlier," Cascarino said. “There was no urgency.

“I was watching Leeds in the earlier game, and then watching Man United at 5:30pm, and I was thinking, ‘maybe United do need something different’.

“Not players, but maybe they need Bielsa."

Solskjaer defended his side after the match, blaming a lack of time to prepare as a significant disadvantage to Palace, who finished their 2019/20 season three weeks earlier.

Much of the criticism aimed at Solskjaer though has been around his managerial experience, with many believing the Norwegian landed the role purely due to his connections with the club from his playing days.

While United have no doubt progressed since Solskjaer took charge, there are still few signs of him stamping his style and identity on their play.

Bielsa meanwhile has transformed Leeds into a high-pressing outfit playing an attractive brand of football which has so far seen them score seven times in two fixtures back in the top flight.

Cascarino continued: "I’m looking at Man United and thinking they do the exact opposite of what Leeds do – they don’t take risks.

“When Ole gets it right – and he has got it right in a good few games – they are offensive and attacking and dangerous from many parts of the team.

“But yesterday they were laboured, sloppy and never had anything which represents Manchester United.”
