Marcelo Bielsa's verdict on Kemar Roofe's first start since February and striker's play-off prospects

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa believes that star forward Kemar Roofe will be almost back to his best when he lines up for the play-off clash with Derby County this weekend.

The striker made his first start for the club since February when he featured in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Ipswich Town in the final regular game of the season.

Though he did not get on the scoresheet himself and would miss a second-half penalty, the former Oxford United man was involved in both of his side’s goals as they ended the regular season with a loss against the Tractor Boys.

Roofe’s return to fitness however does hand Leeds a significant boost heading into the post-season campaign, starting with the first leg of their play-off semi-final against Frank Lampard’s Rams.

Fellow striker Patrick Bamford will miss the initial tie due to serving the second game of a two match ban for simulation against Aston Villa last month.

Commenting on the performance of the 26-year-old in his post-match press conference, Bielsa noted that it was noticeable that the forward had spent time on the sidelines.

However, the Argentine further praised him for his contributions, stressing his importance in creating opportunities.

“He had some actions that could break the balance,” he stated. "We can see that he has been absent for many games but he was always linked to the goal.

“He won the duels when he had to get rid of the mark of the centre-backs.

“I think my point of view is that he will arrive to Saturday's game close to his highest level. It was a necessary game for him today.”

Leeds will face County on Saturday 11 May at Pride Park, before a second leg reverse at Elland Road four days later on Wednesday 15 May.
