Marcelo Bielsa's success at Leeds United inspires Argentina legend to plot English move

Former Argentina star Hernan Crespo says Marcelo Bielsa's success at Leeds United has inspired him to look at coaching in England.

After retiring in 2012, the former striker has had spells in charge of Serie B club Modena and Argentinian side Bamford.

He was appointed Defensa y Justicia manager in January but already appears to be open to a move elsewhere.

Crespo and Bielsa had a high-profile reconciliation following a long feud when, in 2018, the Leeds boss apologised for lying to the striker when in charge of Argentina.

Having also played under the likes of Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, Crespo told the Daily Mail that they have inspired him to open his mind to coaching.

He said: "Being a coach is beautiful.

"Being beside Jose at Chelsea and Inter, I learned that the manager is 360 degrees.

"How to deal with journalists, doctors, players, backroom staff, the atmosphere, fans, with everything.

"These three (Mourinho, Bielsa and Ancelotti) opened up my mind to certain things.

"I admired Marco Van Basten, Romario but I couldn’t be Van Basten or Romario, I had to be Hernan Crespo.

"I will simply try to put my name on the map without imitating anyone.

"If you manage to survive Argentinian football, which is a big, beautiful madness, you are ready for anywhere in the world."

He added: "For me it’s about identity.

"'This is the way that Crespo wants to play'. I like the managers who have identity like Pep Guardiola or Diego Simeone or Jurgen Klopp."

Crespo has paid close attention to Bielsa's success at the Whites and, having played for Chelsea himself, is keen for a return to England.

He said: "I was very happy playing in England, going to training, very happy with the fans.

Marcelo Bielsa's apology to Hernan Crespo in full

"That is why today as a manager I would like to be able to re-live that.

"I admire the Premier League and even the Championship, too."

Shortly after Bielsa's appointment at Leeds, he issued a lengthy public apology to Crespo during a Thorp Arch press conference over an incident during their time together at the Argentina national team, more than a decade-and-a-half ago.

"When he was a young player I told him once that I thought he was a player with maturity, but I was lying to him. I was trying to strengthen his self-esteem. Giving him a skill that I didn’t think he had.

"After some time when he got the maturity I told him now you’re really a mature player, not the same player as before.

"What did he think? He thought: 'How come you told me I wasn’t mature and now you're saying I am? So you lied to me? Because before you told me I was a strong player but you didn’t believe it.'

"This is the kind of thing I cannot forgive myself. I’m right not to forgive myself."
