Marcelo Bielsa's message to his bit-part players as intense run-in begins to test Leeds United's squad depth

With Leeds United currently taking part in the club's most intense run-in since the hectic trophy-chasing days of Don Revie, squad depth is likely to be more important than it ever has under Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine has never made changes for changes sake during his two-year stint in West Yorkshire, instead preaching continuity and loyalty a core band of players.

This approach has served him well, but the compressed post-lockdown run-in has brought about a unique set of challenges that may well force his hand.

Saturday's 3-1 win over Blackburn was the first of six matches in an 18-day run that will determine Leeds' automatic promotion hopes, with Bielsa being forced into making two changes to his side.

Gjanni Alioski, who has been clocking up regular minutes since the resumption came in on the flanks to replace Costa, while Barry Douglas was handed his first start since January's FA Cup defeat at Arsenal as he replaced Dallas at left-back.

The Scot took little time in getting back up to speed with a performance that Bielsa praised after the match.

"In defence he had a good match, an efficient match," he said. "We were playing out, he is always correct. And even he didn’t attack a lot, he chose the right moments to attack."

With the post-shutdown evidence pointing to an increased risk of muscle injuries following the resumption, Leeds may have to call upon more players who have seen little action in recent months over the final five matches.

Leeds midfielder Mateusz Klich was not surprised by Douglas' performance and spoke about how vital it is for players to be able to step up when needed.

"It's very important," the Pole said following the Ewood Park victory. "This is what Marcelo is saying in the training sessions that we have players who don't play, they rarely play, but every time they go in they play good and they play at the same level as player who play every game.

"Barry does that all the time. He didn't play for a long time and then played against Arsenal in the cup and he was one of the best players on the pitch. Unfortunately he had some issues with injuries, but every time he plays, he plays good.

"Gjanni is always ready, Bera is always ready so I'm very happy because the team has great spirit, no one is angry, everyone is ready to play and ready to help, so that's the way it should be."
