Marcelo Bielsa's brother delivers update on his future if Leeds win promotion

Marcelo Bielsa is set to remain at Leeds after his brother said he would not walk away if they won promotion.

Bielsa’s contract with Leeds is due to expire when the campaign ends next week and the club want to take up the 12-month option for next season.

Bielsa, who is 65 next Tuesday, has put talk about his future on hold to focus on ending Leeds’ 16-year exile from the Premier League, but his brother Rafael is confident he will stay if they go up.

Lawyer Rafael, who is a former foreign minister in Argentina, handles his brother’s contract negotiations and says he will want a crack at the Premier League.

Leeds need four more points to return to the top flight and Rafael told Argentinian sports channel TyC Sports: “It’s been a long time since I’ve spoken to him, but the question should be, how could you not renew your contract if you go up as champions?

“It’s always better to go to the Premier League with a team where you know all the players.”

Rafael says his brother is happy at the Championship leaders and that the former Argentina and Chile boss loves the fans’ passion for the club.

“I did not visit him, but I read that in the city he is like a rock star,” he said. “He likes the identity of the club and its facilities.”

Marcelo Bielsa's brother has dismissed him returning to his first club Newell's Old Boys (PA)

Bielsa has long been linked with a return to his native Argentina to manage his first club and big love, Newell’s Old Boys, but Rafael ruled this out.

"How can I put it bluntly," he said. “Why should Marcelo be expected to go back and lead Newell’s?”
