Marcelo Bielsa on the psychological impact of last season's play-offs to Leeds United's players

Leeds United are driven by the "pain" of their play-off near-miss in May, Marcelo Bielsa has revealed as his side prepare to face Brentford on Wednesday in the Championship.

Having led the charge for the top tier for most of 2018/19, United faltered at the final few hurdles, crashing out at Elland Road in the play-off semi-finals to Derby County in a heartbreaking loss.

The Whites are top of the table on goal difference once again after going unbeaten across the first three games of the season and already look to be emulating their best form from last season as they seek promotion to the Premier League.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the visit of the Bees to Elland Road on Wednesday, Bielsa stated their impressive start has certainly given them a psychological boost, though his team will not rest on their laurels.

"In normal circumstances, to get the win is important. In any circumstance, not winning makes it complicated. Of course, we do not want to be satisfied or have the satisfaction when we are watching one dynamic with good results," he said.

Asked about how much their failure to reach Wembley and the top flight has fuelled their form, he added: "If you are thinking of last year, you can feel the pain, but we have the possibility to change this situation.

"The illusion, the motivation, they go in front of the disappointed feeling in this case."

Leeds got back to winning ways in the league at the weekend following a home draw with Nottingham Forest, as they downed Wigan Athletic 2-0 thanks to a Patrick Bamford double.
