Marcelo Bielsa on the key second-half change that helped Leeds 'get on top' of Newcastle United

Marcelo Bielsa has paid tribute to Leeds' second-half 'efficiency' against Newcastle United after the Whites 'got on top' of the Magpies with three goals in 11 remarkable minutes late on.

Jeff Hendrick broke the deadlock for the visitors against the run of play in the first half after Leeds spurned a handful of decent openings but Patrick Bamford equalised for the home side 10 minutes before half-time.

Rodrigo later put the Whites in front for the first time on the night just after the hour mark but Ciaran Clark headed Newcastle level from a corner midway through the second half.

However, having done well to get themselves back into the game, Newcastle were the architects of their own downfall in the closing stages.

Sean Longstaff was dispossessed in a dangerous area in the build-up to Stuart Dallas putting Leeds back in front on 77 minutes; Ezgjan Alioski doubled the Whites' advantage eight minutes later after the home side tore Newcastle apart from the visitors' own corner; and, on 88 minutes, Leeds again outnumbered Newcastle on a breakaway from a Magpies' corner kick and Jack Harrison let fly from 25 yards to score his side's fifth goal.

Newly-promoted Leeds had won just one of their previous six games going into the 5-2 win so Bielsa was understandably pleased as his side leapfrogged Newcastle in the table.

"It was a deserved victory," he told reporters on Zoom after the game. "In both halves, we attacked a lot and created plenty of chances. In the second half, we were more efficient.

"The team carried on playing in a calm and organised manner after they levelled the game and eventually we were able to get on top of them again and score the goals when we needed to.

"We managed the ball very patiently. That's what impressed me most about the team."
