Marcelo Bielsa on the 'cunning case' of Patrick Bamford

He's managed two countries in the World Cup, won an Olympic gold medal and inspired a generation of coaches and devotees.

But during his 30-year career in the dugout, Marcelo Bielsa has never encountered such a 'cunning case' as the one of Patrick Bamford's recent form at Leeds United.

The Whites striker opened the scoring at Luton Town on Saturday before claiming Leeds' disputed 90th minute winner to make it two (or three) goals in his past two games and consign a ten-match goalless run to the history books.

Bielsa kept the faith with his number nine during this run, with an injury to Eddie Nketiah ensuring that Bamford maintained his record of starting every Championship game this term, with the 26-year-old putting in a number of excellent performance, despite a failure to find the back of the bet.

Now that the former Chelsea and Middlesbrough forward has come out of his barren run the other side, he revealed that Bielsa had not encountered a situation where a striker's performances had not tallied up with goals.

"He was brilliant to be honest," Bamford said of Bielsa's dealing with the situation.

"He said that it was a cunning case, a unique case, because normally if a striker is not scoring, it's because he's s**t. Or because he's not playing. But with you, it's neither of them, so it's a unique case, 'I don't understand,' he said. 'But I'm sure you will score, you should be scoring every game'. So he's been good.

"The most important thing is that I work for the team. If we win and I don't score, at the end of the day it doesn't matter because we've got the three points.

"In terms of that, he just keeps pushing at me to make sure I'm there for the team, make sure I'm doing the running for the team, make sure I'm basically part of the team, showing something - if I'm not showing the goals, then show something else. So I feel like I was doing that whilst I wasn't scoring. It'll be nice to be doing both obviously."

Bamford opener was his sixth goal of the season and he was eager to take credit for the 90th minute winner which saw Leeds return to the automatic promotion places.

"As a striker you claim them," he continued. "I think I stood across the front and I think I actually got my studs on it. I know that sounds vague but... I think I got my studs on it but I didn't have a clue where it went so I didn't even know it had gone in until I obliviously looked up and I was like no chance I'm letting them think it's an own goal, running off claiming it.

"I don't know whether it was heading towards the goal but I got a nick on it."

While Bamford awaits a decision from the dubious goal committee, Leeds will quickly return to action, with a trip to Reading coming up on Tuesday evening, with Leeds eyeing a fourth win in a row.
