Marcelo Bielsa misses out on Championship Manager of the Month award

Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa has missed out on being named the Championship Manager of the Month for December, with the award going to former Whites defender and now-Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate.

Bielsa, who will be hoping to see his side record their first Championship victory of the decade when they welcome Sheffield Wednesday to Elland Road tomorrow afternoon, was one of four managers initially named on the shortlist for the gong, alongside Woodgate, Millwall chief Gary Rowett and Reading manager Mark Bowen.

Despite guiding Leeds to 11 points from six Championship outings during December, the award has not found itself landing at Thorp Arch, instead heading to Riverside Stadium to be awarded to Woodgate.

After a torrid start to the campaign, Woodgate, who played for Leeds between 1998 and 2003, started to transform the Teesiders' fortunes over the festive period, guiding them to four wins from six, losing just once, meaning they recorded an impressive 13 points in December.

And what makes Woodgate even more worthy of the award is he guided his youthful Boro team to a very impressive 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

Had Bielsa been handed the accolade, it would have been the second month in succession that the Argentine would have scooped the lucrative award.
