Marcelo Bielsa makes 'unheard of' change to Leeds United training following Brighton defeat

The postponement of Leeds United's clash against Southampton this week means the club are currently in a ten-day gap between Premier League fixtures.

This is something of an unusual situation for the majority of the Whites squad, who until this season were used to the twice-weekly grind of matches in the Championship.

That tended to mean that the club did not have to dwell on defeats for long, as the opportunity to put things right on the pitch quickly came around.

Does no goals in three games worry Bielsa?

Leeds are spending this current layoff licking their wounds after three consecutive defeats across all competitions however, with Patrick Bamford admitting that he cannot wait to get back to match action.

"Yeah, it's annoying," the Whites' leading goalscorer told the Leeds United podcast. "Obviously, in the Championship you play Saturday, Tuesday most weeks. Whereas now sometimes we have eight days between a game, sometimes ten like in this instance. It's frustrating because you want to put it right straight away.

"I think that even if you're tired, it is better playing games. You don't want a long week because a long week of just training compared to games is boring. You don't get the same adrenaline rush, it's not quite the same. I know it's a must-do thing, but you want to be playing games as much as possible."

Bamford admitted he and his team-mates were left frustrated following the 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, but Marcelo Bielsa and his coaching staff have made changes to the squad's training regime in order to raise morale in the squad.

"We were frustrated after the game in the changing room and I think everyone was a bit down. We were all blaming the pitch and saying how shocking it was but we knew that we weren't good enough ourselves.

"To be fair since we've gone back in it's just been a steady build-up now to the next game. Today was weird, we had a day of head tennis tournaments which is unheard of in our training. I think it was trying to boost the spirits a little bit. Obviously, we had some players playing in the 23s the other day."

While three consecutive defeats has taken the immediate shine off what has been a positive first half of the season for Leeds, Bamford insists the squad are maintaining their perspective.

"In general everyone is upbeat," he added. "At the start of the season if someone said you'll be 12th with this many points at this stage, everyone would be like 'flipping heck, bite your hand off'. I think that being a little bit harsh on ourselves just shows how optimistic we are and how much we believe in ourselves that we should be doing better."

Leeds are finally back in action on Tuesday evening when they visit out-of-sorts Newcastle United.
