Marcelo Bielsa looking to put past behind him with Leeds United result over Jose Mourinho

Marcelo Bielsa has faced 18 different managers on four separate occasions, but only Jose Mourinho has beaten him every time. The Portuguese is an outlier in Bielsa's managerial record, one of few men he is yet to overcome.

This Saturday represents a unique opportunity for Bielsa to right the wrongs of his four previous encounters with his decorated opponent. Leeds are currently on a two-game winning run, having not conceded for over 180 minutes.

Spurs on the other hand are winless in four in the Premier League - their last triumph in domestic competition coming over North London rivals Arsenal almost a month ago.

Since then, Mourinho's men have drawn two and lost two, but unlike much of last season, have almost all of their key players available for the Leeds United match-up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bielsa's four previous defeats to Mourinho were as manager of Athletic Club. The Bilbao-based side fell to Mourinho's Real Madrid twice during 2011/12 and twice again in the 2012/13 iteration of La Liga.

Rather more concerning is that each of the defeats were by at least a three-goal margin. Athletic lost 3-0 on two occasions, as well as succumbing to 4-1 and 5-1 losses at the hands of Mourinho's Madrid.

There are caveats to be had here though, with Athletic's club policy of only fielding players born in the Basque region greatly limiting their pool of talent to pick from. By contrast, Mourinho's Real were backed by the Fort Knox-esque wealth bestowed upon the capital club by its commercial deals, sponsors and millions of supporters around the world.

To say there was something of a mismatch between the two sides between 2011 and 2013 would be an understatement.

Bielsa's Athletic defence faced a Madrid front four comprised of Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil and Karim Benzema; far from a straightforward task.

Bielsa's makeshift Leeds defence will have plenty asked of them this weekend too. Luke Ayling and Pascal Struijk are expected to start in central defence again, going up against Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and former Real winger Gareth Bale.

It is very much a mismatch of similar proportions given the wealth Tottenham are currently blessed with, having only just built a state-of-the-art 60,000-seater stadium. Leeds by contrast will likely field a back-line that cost in the region of £5 million.

Leeds supporters will hope that the lessons learned from Bielsa's four previous defeats at the hands of Mourinho will have taught the Argentine how to combat the Portuguese tactician.

That said, Mourinho's standing in the game is considerably less in 2021 than it was eight or nine years ago, reflected by the fact he is managing a Tottenham, rather than a Real.

Bielsa's Leeds are on the up, but Mourinho's Spurs are too, albeit at a steadier pace. That may well be reflected on the pitch this Saturday lunchtime as two teams eager to build on their encouraging beginnings to the season, by starting fast and playing ruthless football.
