Marcelo Bielsa issues challenge to Leeds United youngsters as Crysencio Summerville is confirmed

Here is your Leeds United digest for Thursday, September 17.

Bielsa's challenge

Marcelo Bielsa says Leeds United's youngsters need to show they have what it takes on the pitch as well as the training ground.

The Leeds boss rang the changes for the Carabao Cup game against Hull City, only to see his gamble backfire as they lost on penalties in a below-par performance.

Leeds: 2020/21 season in preview

Bielsa changed his entire starting XI and said the players who played have blown a chance to get more regular football in the competition.

He said: "They have waited to play for this club, but when you wear this shirt you need to want to play, to eat the grass on the pitch.

"In training they are good and they work hard, but it’s more important in matches to show the manager they are ready. Now we lose, it’s a chance less to show him.

"Not so good because the cup is a chance to play. They are young, they will have time to show, but you don’t have a lot of time to show. It’s not good, but when we lose it’s an opportunity less."

Player ratings

It was not a good night for some of the Whites' attacking players against Hull.

Whilst Ian Carlo Poveda certainly impressed and was one of the few bright spots in a disappointing night, record signing Rodrigo had a full debut to forget.

The striker has some way to go with building relationships with those around him to fashion chances.

Summerville signs

The Whites have confirmed the signing of Crysencio Summerville on a three-year deal.

Summerville arrives from Feyenoord and will go into the club's under-23 ranks.

The Dutchman is the 10th player signed for the club's under-23s system and offers a much-needed wide option to the youth squad.
