Marcelo Bielsa explains half-time Patrick Bamford substitution decision for Leeds United

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has explained his reasoning behind substituting Patrick Bamford at half-time of the 3-0 victory over Fulham.

Bamford opened the scoring during the first half but was hauled off at the break, with Pablo Hernandez coming on in his place.

The Spaniard pulled the strings in the second period, which included a magnificent assist for Jack Harrison in the game's third goal, marking his return to the side expertly.

However, the decision to replace Bamford at the break despite the fact that he scored did raise eyebrows but Bielsa has explained his reasoning.

"In the first half, it was difficult to keep the ball after we recovered it. So, I thought we must try a different option with Tyler Roberts and Pablo Hernandez to manage the attack of the team better," he told Sky Sports.

"When Pablo came, it improved the performance of the team. He had a long period without playing so we thought the better option was that 45 minutes was enough."

Leeds are now 14 points shy of securing a long-awaited return to the Premier League, with Luton Town in midweek their next fixture.
