Marcelo Bielsa details where Leeds are in their bid to return to football's top table

Marcelo Bielsa claims Leeds are still some way off repeating their past glories despite their progress under him.

Leeds won at champions elect Manchester City on Saturday and can record four successive Premier League wins for the first time in 20 years if they beat Liverpool on Monday.

Yet Bielsa insists they have much further to go before they can emulate the great sides of Don Revie, Howard Wilkinson and David O’Leary.

“I have always said Leeds is a very big club,” said the Leeds head coach. “The sporting past of Leeds is full of high points.

“To win four games in a row in the Premier League compared to all the things Leeds have achieved, of course would give us great happiness, but if you compare it to the past, it would not be so big.

“For us to be at the heights of the past, some extraordinary things need to be done and we’re quite far away from that.”

Bielsa is keen to keep Leeds grounded, despite successfully establishing them in the top flight after their 16-year exile.

He feels they have much more work to do and rejected claims their win at the Etihad proves they can compete with the Premier League’s elite.

“Against the traditional top six teams, only against Arsenal in the first half of the first game were we able to play against them as equals,” he said.

“In the game against Manchester United we didn’t deserve a better result than the defeat we got. The same with Tottenham.

“The two games against Chelsea were very difficult for us, especially the first one. The draw against Chelsea was deserved, but it was a game they dominated.

“The two games against City, the draw at home was a fair one. And the last game against City, in the first half they were better than us and in the second half they were a man down.

“My conclusions are not the same as yours because we have not been able to play as equals against the traditional top six in the Premier League.”
