Marcelo Bielsa delivers his judgement on Ian Poveda's Leeds United debut

Marcelo Bielsa said Ian Poveda showed he is an 'agile' player after the January signing finally made his Leeds United debut at the weekend.

Former Manchester City winger Poveda came off the bench for the final 13 minutes against Cardiff City, shortly after the Whites had fallen 2-0 behind.

While the 20-year-old was unable to influence the final result as Leeds slumped to their first defeat in seven matches, he was able to give a glimpse of what he can offer Bielsa's side.

Unafraid to take players on, Poveda linked up well with the overlapping Stuart Dallas on the right-hand side saw one of his balls into the crowded box cleared off the line.

Following the defeat, Bielsa offered up his assessment of how the England youth international's first-team bow went.

"The minutes he played, even if he didn’t imbalance his side, he made some contribution to the play," said the Argentine.

"If you consider the kind of match we were playing, with the opponent too close to their own box, it’s more difficult to attack in those conditions, but he has some good capacity to adapt himself to reduced spaces.

"He is an agile player."

Poveda's debut came five months after he signed for the club on a four-and-a-half year deal, with the winger previously having to settle for under-23s appearances as he got up to speed with Bielsa's methods.

The new rule change which sees teams permitted to make five substitutions and name nine players on the bench will no doubt boost Poveda's chances of featuring in the run-in.
