Marcelo Bielsa confirms he expects no new debutants in Leeds United's Crawley Town cup clash

Leeds United could well field a strong side this weekend following confirmation that Marcelo Bielsa does not intend to hand any debuts to his younger players this Sunday.

Bielsa's men go up against John Yems' Crawley Town at The People's Pension Stadium in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round, hoping to avoid what could be a potential banana skin.

The Argentine stated the FA Cup represented "English football in its purest form" and stressed he understood the importance and history of the competition.

He also stated he was prepared to go up against a team who respond well to a direct approach, who possess the capabilities to cause Leeds problems.

The Whites do not have a great record under Bielsa in this competition, losing both ties in previous seasons, however those results proved inconsequential.

When asked by the BBC whether he was considering some debutants this weekend, Bielsa jokingly suggested that it was easier when he had named his starting XI.

He went on to add, after a brief pause to compose his thoughts, that he did not expect any Leeds debuts at Crawley this Sunday, which rules out a handful of hopefuls.

Bielsa's hesitation does mean that he could be considering a couple of younger players with few first-team appearances, such as Charlie Cresswell and Ollie Casey who featured in the League Cup versus Hull City earlier this season.

The likes of Niall Huggins, Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt and Jack Jenkins could be set to miss out in light of Bielsa's comments though, with each member of the young quartet yet to make their senior bow.

Greenwood and Gelhardt in particular have excelled in U-23 football this season, scoring 11 goals between them for Mark Jackson's development side who are currently top of Premier League 2 Division 2.

Bielsa's comments do point towards involvement for the likes of Jamie Shackleton, who has played fewer than 300 league minutes and would benefit from time on the pitch, as well as U-23s centre-back Charlie Cresswell.

Cresswell impressed last time out for the U-23s, leading his team to a 7-1 victory in which he scored a towering header.

With news that Liam Cooper and Diego Llorente are back in contention, that makes Cresswell's task of breaking into the first-team all the more difficult but if Bielsa does intend to provide time on the pitch for his young lieutenant, Crawley presents a great opportunity.
