Marcelo Bielsa compared to Sven-Goran Eriksson as Leeds United boss inspires Euro 2020 minnows

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa is known to have been a major influencer over many of his former pupils.

The coaching network which has branched out from Bielsa's former players is an exhaustive and extensive one. The Argentine has inspired a vast array of professional footballers into exploring the intricacies of top level management and coaching.

One such student is Marco Rossi - currently managing the Hungarian national team.

Rossi had a journeyman-like career throughout his playing days, as well in management, but was fortunate to work with Bielsa for a brief period in Mexico.

Rossi's Magyars drew with France at UEFA Euro 2020 on Sunday afternoon, with Attila Fiola opening the scoring in front of a packed-out Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Didier Deschamps' French side equalised in the second half, but the 1-1 final scoreline still represented an upset in Group F.

Rossi's side fought valiantly to keep the world champions at bay, keeping themselves in with a fighting chance of qualification to the knockout rounds.

Speaking to El Pais earlier this month, Rossi revealed his admiration for the Leeds United man having worked under Bielsa at Club America in the mid-1990s.

“I always wanted to be a coach, but after I met him, I took it seriously," Rossi said, as quoted by Inside Futbol.

“Before I had [Mircea] Lucescu and Sven-Goran Eriksson, who took into account the smallest details.

“But Bielsa was a step above.

“I haven’t seen anything like it because he was ahead of his time.

“He worked differently, he paid minute attention to tactics, he divided the field with ropes…Incredible.”

Clearly, Bielsa's methods have left a lasting impression on yet another manager who has made it to the pinnacle of international coaching.

Bielsa is known to have inspired Mauricio Pellegrino from his time working at Velez Sarsfield, Diego Simeone from his tenure as Argentine chief and Mauricio Pochettino through his work with Newell's Old Boys.

While those three are some of the most high-profile disciples of Bielsa and his methods, the coaching network extends far beyond - as proven most recently by Rossi.
