Marcelo Bielsa claims winning promotion with Leeds without playing would be "disappointing"

Marcelo Bielsa claims he always wanted to win promotion with Leeds on the pitch rather than by using a calculator.

Bielsa says it would have been “disappointing” to have decided the final Championship placings by points-per-game, even though Leeds would have been automatically promoted.

Leaders Leeds hold a seven-point advantage over third-placed Fulham ahead of their return at Cardiff on Sunday and Bielsa claims they want to secure promotion for themselves.

“If we get something without playing, it would be disappointing,” said the Leeds boss.

“We will play the last nine matches and this is the period, which will define if we achieve our objective in the competition or not.”

Leeds did not manage to play a friendly before the Championship’s resumption and Bielsa claims all the clubs have had to deal with the same difficulties in the build-up.

“There are nine games left and this is not a problem for us,” said the Argentinian.

“It’s a situation that everyone has to face without exception. It’s the best way to resolve the season and we are ready to go.”

Leeds fans will not be able to witness their return to the Premier League after 16 years if they go up and Bielsa says the players must adapt to not having them roaring them on.

“I think the most-important thing is the mental adaptation of the players to the new situation,” he said.

“The main thing in football is the spectators and the presence of the supporters is something very important.

“But this situation is for football in general and everyone in the Championship has to adapt to having no fans.”
