Marcelo Bielsa can use special relationship with PSG boss to help future Leeds United transfers

As the story goes, Marcelo Bielsa drove well into the night to seek out a future Argentina international during his youth coaching days.

The destination was the town of Murphy, located in Argentina's Santa Fe province, a two-hour journey from Rosario, the city which is home to Newell's Old Boys.

Bielsa was a youth coach at the club in the mid-1980s, and had heard through word of mouth of a brilliant teenager in Murphy - the town named after an Irishman from County Wexford.

That player was Mauricio Pochettino, and when Bielsa arrived at the Pochettino residence, he remained until he had convinced the parents of the future Tottenham manager that their son should sign for Newell's.

He insisted on seeing a sleeping Mauricio Pochettino's legs, before supposedly declaring they were "footballer's legs."

From there, the tale is as such: Pochettino played over 150 times for Newell's before embarking on a career in Europe. Then, while Bielsa was manager of the Argentine national team in the late 1990s, Pochettino was called up to the senior squad, where the duo worked once again.

In Pochettino's first managerial posting at La Liga club Espanyol, the pair locked horns in opposing dugouts for the first time as Bielsa's Athletic went up against Pochettino's Espanyol.

The respect the two share for each other is clear, Pochettino has spoken at length in documentaries and in press conferences of his admiration for his mentor.

Now, the younger of the two managers takes on his biggest job yet, as head coach of Paris Saint-Germain.

Leeds United have been linked with an unlikely move for 2014 World Cup winner Julian Draxler according to Gazzetta dello Sport, and with the January transfer window opening, speculation has accelerated.

Pochettino will be keen to leave his stamp on first-team proceedings as soon as possible, determining who has a role to play in his iteration of PSG, and who does not.

Despite this, it remains highly unlikely that Draxler will make a switch to West Yorkshire, owing to the likelihood that his wages would smash through Leeds' pay structure, even on loan.

This relationship, shared between the two coaches is unlikely to make negotiations between the two clubs any easier - transfers are always difficult agreements to reach - but the mutual respect must be seen as a positive.

Carlo Ancelotti's influence has helped lure James Rodriguez to Everton this season, a move which would have seemed impossible under some of the Italian's predecessors, proving that figures of certain standing in the game can make all the difference in transfer negotiations.
