Here is your Leeds United morning digest for Sunday, September 20.
Bielsa claims Leeds struggled to ‘show ourselves’ in Fulham win
Marcelo Bielsa has admitted Leeds struggled to assert themselves over Fulham for long periods of Saturday’s game.
The Whites edged to a 4-3 win at Elland Road thanks to goals from Helder Costa, Patrick Bamford and Mateusz Klich.
Having seen his side almost surrender a 4-1 lead, Bielsa has pointed out where Leeds can improve.
“It was a game where we couldn't really show ourselves,” he said. “In the first half we defended better but we didn't really create much danger. In the second half, we attacked a bit better, but we didn’t finish attacks very well.
“In the ten-minute spell after 4-3 was our best moment and finally we were able to impose our game a little bit.
“There’s no particular motive for why we’re so efficient at the moment. Normally we're a team that needs to create a lot of chances to score goals and at the moment the opposite is happening. I don't think it's anything definitive.”
Merson condemns ‘unbelievable’ penalty decision
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson was in disbelief after Fulham were awarded a penalty in the first half of Saturday’s game against Leeds.
Joe Bryan went over in the box under a challenge from summer signing Robin Koch, and Aleksandar Mitrovic converted from the spot.
But Merson, speaking live on Sky Sports, insisted the penalty should never have been given.
“Oh no, it’s not a penalty. They’re going to VAR, it won’t be a penalty,” he said.
“Bryan goes through and then he dives - he dives a week before Koch comes across. Unbelievable. He should be sent off.
“I can’t believe it’s a penalty. He’s given it. Oh my god, what am I watching? I’m definitely having these glasses changed because I didn’t think it was a penalty.”
Lineker makes Match of the Day joke during Leeds win
Saturday’s 4-3 win over Fulham meant 14 goals have been scored in the Whites’ opening two Premier League games.
And Match of the Day presenter Lineker is clearly one of many new admirers of Bielsa’s side.
“Great stuff from @LUFC and they’re 4-1 up,” he tweeted. “There seems a real desire this season not to be on last on @BBCMOTD.”
