Marcedes Lewis chimes in on what Jags should do about Leonard Fournette, Blake Bortles

Though he’s currently not on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster, tight end Marcedes Lewis still watches his former comrades with a close eye being that he spent many years on the field going to battle with them. In a recent interview with TMZ, he was asked about their star running back, Leonard Fournette, who has been rumored to be a trade candidate by many after football executive Tom Coughlin called him out and the team voided his contract guarantees.

In short, Lewis stated it would be a mistake to get rid of the third-year running back who is a valuable piece to their offense when healthy.

“The way they’re structured, and the way they do their things, it’s always about running the ball first and I think Fournette is an amazing running back,” Lewis said. “He’s young, so he has some thing to work on, but they should keep him.”

With the Jags having so many offensive needs already, trading Fournette wouldn’t only be unwise, but as Lewis hinted at, it would put the Jags in a situation where they would be without their best weapon when healthy. That said, he’s absolutely right about the Jags needing to keep Fournette if they can because it would put them in a bad situation offensively.

Lewis also asked about the future with quarterback Blake Bortles and told TMZ that his situation was “different” from Fournette’s in a sense that the veteran would be better off leaving the Jags. Simply put, Lewis stated that a change of scenery was needed for Bortles who endured a lot of changes throughout his tenure as a Jag. Lewis also added that he still viewed Bortles as a starter in his eyes and believes he has the necessary talent to flourish elsewhere.
